Sevenoaks Day Nursery was set up as a charitable Trust and first registered in 1988. So, in effect, no-one owns it; there are no shareholders or directors and because we are a charity we do not pay tax on our income.
It is the Trustees who have the burden of responsibility for the existence of the Nursery and, of course, its future. Until December 2016 the Trustees had been exposed to more or less unlimited liability for the debts of the Nursery. Whilst this was a situation the Trustees were comfortable with, it was becoming difficult to recruit new blood to the Board.
Today the Nursery is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which reduces the financial liability on our Trustees, but not the overall burden of responsibility.
Our constitution, prepared by the Trustees and approved by the Charity Commission, governs how our Nursery is run.
Our current Trustees offer a mix of professional expertise and experience; some are retired, but most hold full-time, full-on jobs.
The Trustees meet formally four to six times a year, but each takes a keen interest in the Nursery and are often seen about the place.
They tend to focus their attention on strategic matters and leave the day-to-day running of the Nursery to the Manager.
If you have something to offer and might consider becoming a trustee, why not drop the Trustees a line - trustees@sevenoaksdaynursery.org.uk
